About us

When Will the Malpractice End?

It’s time we speak the truth that too many have lived: over 60% of birthing people report having a procedure done during labor without fully understanding it or giving true consent. Far too often, families leave birth feeling unheard, unseen, or dismissed in one of life’s most sacred moments.

Obstetrics holds one of the highest rates of malpractice claims in medicine — with OB/GYNs ranking 4th across all specialties. And even when we adjust for population, the U.S. continues to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the developed world, with over 22 deaths per 100,000 births — more than double what’s seen in many other countries.

You deserve better.
You deserve to birth in a space where your body is not just managed, but honored. Where your voice isn’t silenced, but centered. Whether you’re birthing in a hospital, at a birth center, or at home — you have the right to be fully informed and truly respected.

Let’s end the silence. Let’s end the harm.
Let’s call it what it is — and change the way we support birth, one story at a time.

Welcome to ivey & Kate

My Philosophy

Birth isn’t just about getting the baby out — it’s a powerful experience that changes everything for the mother. Your body, your mind, and your heart go through something big and transformative, and you deserve to be supported with care, respect, and softness through all of it.

I believe every woman already holds the wisdom she needs to give birth. We were built to birth — and frankly, if men had to do it, there’d probably be a national holiday for every epidural or a government-funded postpartum retreat. My job isn’t to take over; it’s to walk beside you, gently supporting you as you listen to your body and trust yourself. Whether you're birthing at home, in a hospital, or somewhere in between, my care is grounded in comfort, calm presence, and deep listening.

I focus on serving families who haven’t always been seen or heard in the system or mothers who have experienced DV, SA or other traumas. Too often, birthing people are pushed aside, not fully informed, or not given real choices. I’m here to help change that with evidence-based care, trauma-informed support, and real advocacy.

Birth should never be about just getting through it. I’m here to help you feel strong, seen, and deeply held through it all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at 252-207-2706 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I attend all types of births including home births, birth center births, and hospital births.

My role is never to replace your partner — it’s to support both of you in staying connected, calm, and grounded throughout the birth experience. I gently guide your partner so they feel confident, informed, and emotionally present. Whether that means showing them how to offer physical comfort (like counter pressure or grounding touch), helping them understand the stages of labor, or simply reminding them to rest and hydrate, I’m there to support them too. I help your partner find their own rhythm in the space — offering tools, encouragement, and presence when needed, and stepping back when you two need closeness and quiet. I love helping partners feel like active participants, not just observers, and I hold space for their emotions and experience as well. This is a sacred journey for both of you — and I’m here to help you walk it together, with confidence and care.

I’ve always been drawn to caring for babies and mothers — even from a young age. As the oldest of five siblings and someone who worked in multiple daycare centers, nurturing little ones has always felt natural to me. In high school, I found myself fascinated by both birth and photography, dreaming of becoming a labor and delivery nurse one day. But after graduating, life unfolded differently — I got married, had my first baby, and chose to become a stay-at-home mom. That season opened me up to something even deeper: the desire to support others in their own journeys through motherhood. After experiencing a traumatic second birth and postpartum, I began exploring birth and healing from a more holistic and intuitive lens. What started as personal healing became a passion — I dove into holistic health, rooted parenting, nature-based rhythms, and the unraveling of what no longer served in the modern medical model. I realized I wasn’t meant to be a nurse inside the system — I was meant to walk beside women, outside of it, offering care that feels grounded, tender, and true. Living in an underserved community, I couldn’t ignore what I saw around me — poor maternal outcomes, high rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and unaddressed trauma. I knew I needed to do more than just show up — I needed the tools to hold space safely and responsibly. That’s what led me to become a Certified Trauma-Informed Care Provider (TIC-PC), allowing me to deepen my practice and better support the people I serve. Birth work called me back again and again — and stepping into doula care was like coming home. It’s an honor to hold space for women in one of the most sacred and transformational seasons of their lives. My dream is to continue practicing as a doula to gain experience to enter Midwifery school.

I started my journey in healthcare by completing a semester in nursing school, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that the traditional medical system often falls short — especially when it comes to honoring birth and caring for women with dignity and respect. I saw how common malpractice, lack of informed consent, and trauma were in maternal care, and I knew I couldn’t be part of a system that didn’t align with my values. That’s when I turned to birth work in a different way — as a doula.

Instead of pursuing a paper certification, I chose a more hands-on path. I jumped right in, supporting birthing women directly and learning through real-world experience. I’ve gained my education through continuous self-study, mentorship, and by being present with families during labor and postpartum. I believe this immersive approach has given me a deeper, more intuitive understanding of birth and the individual needs of each family.

I’m also a Certified Trauma-Informed Care Provider (TIC-PC), which means I’ve been trained to understand how trauma — including birth trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other adverse experiences — can affect someone’s body, nervous system, and sense of safety and how that comes into play during birt. This training allows me to offer care that’s gentle, respectful, and sensitive to each person’s lived experience.

My long-term goal is to attend midwifery school. Practicing as a doula has been a meaningful way to build experience and deepen my understanding of birth outside the limits of a broken system. This isn’t just a step toward something else — it’s the heart of the work I feel called to do.

Love, Ivey & Kate

My website wouldn’t be complete without including the two little souls who inspired it all. I get asked all the time — “Are you Ivey or Kate?” The answer is neither. Ivey and Kate are my daughters — the ones who opened my eyes and completely changed the course of my life.

It was through becoming their mother that I began to see the cracks in the system — the rushed care, the lack of informed consent, the trauma that so often goes unspoken. They’re the reason I started asking hard questions and searching for something better. They’re the reason I walked away from the traditional path and chose to offer care that puts mothers and babies at the center — where they belong.

Ivey & Kate aren’t just names — they’re the heartbeat behind this work. They’re why I believe every mother and every baby deserves to be seen, supported, and given the chance to thrive. And more than anything, I hope to help change the future — so that by the time they become mothers themselves, they’ll be met with care that is safe, respectful, and free from the harm so many have endured.
